Mechanical Engineer for the Development of the Neutral Beam Source
Job Description:
- The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics is a leading center for fusion research, focusing on the development of technologies for future fusion power plants. The position is within the ITER Technology and Diagnostics department. As a member of the Neutral Beam Injection team, the candidate will contribute to the development of RF-driven negative ion sources essential for heating plasma in fusion experiments, including ITER, reaching temperatures up to 100 million Kelvin. The role involves providing technical support to the NBI test facilities BATMAN Upgrade and ELISE through implementing upgrades, modifications, and diagnostic enhancements. Work will be conducted in Garching alongside the IPP NBI team.

Key responsibilities include ensuring the operational reliability of test facilities and overseeing upgrades.:
- Ensure the reliable operation of the ELISE and BATMAN Upgrade test facilities and their subsystems, such as vacuum pumps and cooling systems, Implement upgrades to the test beds, including source modifications and diagnostic improvements, Design new and modified components, incorporating structural, thermal, and fluid dynamic calculations, Manage procurement of components from both industry and in-house manufacturing, Supervise assembly and installation, assisting in the commissioning of components, Prepare technical reports and present findings at meetings and conferences, Collaborate with European partners in the field, especially with the Neutral Beam Test Facility in Padova

Qualifications:

- Proven experience in engineering projects

- Experience with FEM software (Ansys) for structural
- thermal
- and fluid dynamic calculations
- Familiarity with negative ion source physics and technology is advantageous
- Experience in conducting experiments and programming is beneficial
